The M.Sc.-Ph.D. (dual / integrated) degree in Applied Physics is an integrated doctoral programme, for those interested in a research oriented career. The programme seeks bright and motivated students with Bachelor’s degree in PCM area/B. Tech. in any discipline for a research led career. The academic programme involves foundation courses, advanced courses and research work. The candidate will be awarded both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees on successful completion of the respective program components.
The programme duration is minimum 5 years. The first 2 years of course work is towards the M.Sc. degree, followed by research work of a minimum of 3 years towards the Ph.D. degree.
Admission Scheme: The minimum qualification for admission to the programme is Bachelor’s degree in Physics (PCM) / B. Tech. or an equivalent degree from a University recognised by UGC. Prospective candidates will be shortlisted based on their performance through KITTEE..
The Academic Programme: The Integrated M. Sc-Ph. D programme shall consist of :
(i) Course work involving classroom courses as well as a research project leading to the award of the M.Sc. degree (2 years), and
(ii) Research work leading to a PhD thesis and the award of Ph. D degree. The total credits to be earned are 96 (86 as taught component + 10 in research project through a dissertation).
The evaluation of the students will be based on continuous assessment (quizzes/homeworks etc) and examinations. The Master’s project will be evaluated internally and the thesis will have to be defended in an open thesis defence. The students who have a CGPA 7.0 or more at the end of two years and successfully defend their Master’s thesis shall be eligible for award of the Master’s degree. Students who are unsuccessful in earning a CGPA of 6.0 after the first two years shall be considered ineligible for the M. Sc. degree. Students shall be inducted into the Ph D program directly / comprehensive examination with a CGPA of 7.0.
A student will at most be allowed two attempts to pass / earn 7.0 CGPA at the M. Sc. Examination.
Exit Policy: A candidate who fails to maintain a minimum CPI of 6.0 during their course work, after the stipulated time period will have to leave the program. M.Sc. degree will be awarded to such candidates after completing their M.Sc. course work credit. Also, candidate who chooses to leave the program mid-way will not be awarded any degree.
Course Work: Coursework includes compulsory and elective courses spread over three semesters.
